چکیده

I. The vitamin A content of Saccobranchus fossilis kept on a diet of rice and meat gradually decreased and became negligible at the end of 3-5 months. 2. S.fossiZisinitially contained more dehydroretinol than retinol; administration ofp-carotene or zeaxanthin to the vitamin A-depleted fish did not result in an accumulation of dehydroretinol in the liver. On the other hand, when Iutein was administered by mouth or subcutaneous injection, it was converted into dehydroretinol.

Metabolism of cryptoxanthin in freshwater fish.

In search of other provitamins A, the metabolism of cryptoxanthin was studied in several species of freshwater fish, i.e. Channa gachua, Labeo boga (retinol-rich) and Heteropneustes fossilis (dehydroretinol-rich). The fish were either allowed to starve for 20-25 d to make their intestines free from carotenoids and vitamin A or kept on a vitamin-A-deficient diet for 140-150 d to deplete the init...

Isolation and Synthesis

A new chromogen that absorbs maximally at 329nm was frequently found in the liver oils of the freshwater fish Bagarius bagarius and Wallago attu. It was shown to be a diester of 3-hydroxyretinol. 3-Hydroxyretinol was found to be a metabolite of lutein during the biosynthesis of 3-dehydroretinol in a freshwater fish. A new method for the chemical synthesis of 3-hydroxyretinol from methyl 3-dehyd...

Microcystin-LR: Effects on Freshwater Catfish Heteropneustes fossilis Prolactin Cells

Background: Previous studies have been reported on the toxicity of Microcystin-LR, which is produced by cyanobacterial growth in fish, such as Heteropneustes fossilis (H. fossilis). However, no studies have been conducted on the effects of Microcystin-LR on the prolactin cells of H. fossilis. Methods: H. fossilis fish were intraperitoneally injected with Microcystin-LR (2.5μg/25g) and sacrif...

Microcystin toxicity in a freshwater fish, Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch)

Microcystin is a toxin secreted by cyanobacteria, which are the dominant phytoplankton in eutrophic freshwater bodies. The present study reports histopathological, hematological and biochemical changes in the freshwater fish, Heteropneustes fossilis due to toxicity of microcystin. Toxic effects were observed in liver, kidney, corpuscles of Stannius, gills and gonads. Bilirubin concentration inc...

Acute Toxicity and Behavioural Responses of Heteropneustes Fossilis to an Organophosphate Insecticide, Dimethoate

Static renewal evaluation of the acute toxicity of an organophosphate pesticide, dimethoate against the freshwater fish H. fossilis was conducted in the laboratory. H. fossilis showed behavioural changes against dimethoate intoxication. There were increased opercular movement, sluggish, lethargic and abnormal swimming, loss of buoyancy and muscular tetany. The treated fishes also showed fading ...
